I am thinking about getting another grand and going with the 4.7 probably something around the 2000 year class
what is the towing capacity on these things and is there any year or equipment that I dont want? Color is irrelevant to me though I prefer green of some sort so I am pretty open on years and packages. I am wondering if it will be enough to tow my camper which is about 3800#s and I figured since you guys have already done assloads of research I may as well :bat:pimp it out of you (why lie?)

Max load for towing is 6500 lbs so you should be fine with the trailer. IMO there is really nothing that you "dont want" I would look out for the Dual Zone Climate control, though. Not that you dont want it, just that it is prone to fail so make sure you get hot and cold out of both sides. If you can find a Laredo with the 4.7 or the special edition, those will have the 4.7 without the Dual Zone Climate control. The special edition even comes with the selec-trac transfer case but those are really hard to find.

Im pretty partial to the 4.7HO. The extra 30 hp and 30ft/lb, dual knock sensors, and the forged internals would make it worth it to me to try to find an HO(only available in 2002-2004). Opt for one with the factory tow package, as it gets you an external transmission cooler and all the wiring. As ezflip mentioned, theyre rated at a max of 6500lbs load on the v8s, for a combined max of 11,000lbs. Max tongue weight 750lbs. All the v8's came with the 45rfe/545rfe transmission which is pretty much bullet proof for this sized vehicle, but they didnt start programming the 5th forward gear (a second, second gear) until 2001. If you get a 1999 or 2000, its a simple dealer flash to incorporate the programming. At the end of 2002 they switched from the teves calipers to the akebono calipers. The latter are supposed to be a lot better, and less prone to causing rotor warpage, which is a concern with all WJ model years. They can be swapped out if you end up with a pre-2002. Its pretty hard to find a factory v8 with a selec-trac(NV242), but the quadra-tracII(nv247) is a stronger case anyway, with better ground clearance. I still dont understand why people like the 242's so much, other than being able to do burnouts in 2wd.

All that said, im pretty sure ive pulled that much weight behind mine, but im not sure I would want to on a regular basis. I pulled a trailer loaded with brick/rock/trash that im guessing was in that weight class and it pulled ok. Stopping required leaving a bit of room as the trailer didnt have brakes. A CJ5 with 33's on a car dolly pulled pretty hard, although some of that was a result of tire pressure on the cj and the dolly. It was pretty much 3000rpm all the way to silver lake getting about 8mpg. Mileage on the v8 is pretty much identical to mileage on the I6.

Okay so i have found a few

02 overland 149000 6K$

04 special edition 98k for 9k$

so>> is the overland a trim package? prices seem to be in line with value Im just wondering with the mileage if they are worth it

I have to disagree on mileage. Dacey has an 04 WJ with the I6, Josh has a WJ with the V8 HO. Dacey averages 15 MPG, sometimes 17 if all highway, over 2 years. I drove about 30 miles doing absolutely anything I could for mileage and got 19. Josh (before lifted) averaged 19-20 with me and him driving (occasionally floored).
I would hate to tow my Jeep with the I6, but I have towed my TJ with Josh's V8 HO and it does decent. It's not a full size truck, but it did pretty good. Stopping was ok, acceleration was fine still, and we averaged about 14 MPG. I would consider my TJ on the heavy side too.
Dacey also had the newer rotor (04) and they warped with around 30,000 miles.

foursix: The overland was a model that included the 4.7HO, quadra-drive, skid plate package, up country suspension package (there was no up country option after 2003), and pretty much every option available except for navigation.

chad: According to the window stickers, they are both 15/20. Im pretty sure that pat's wife gets close to 20mpg in her I6 wj. I always got 20-21 in mine before lift, too.

http://www.wjjeeps.com is pretty much a complete source on anything/everything WJ related.

Almost everybody I knew with 4.0's get around 16 MPG. Also, not all Overlands had the Upcountry suspension.

Chad -

My old Grand got around that with the I-6 as well I was actually referencing the mileage on the odometer when I mentioned being worth it. This Overland does have the suspension it was a little later when it was not standard according to Spiegs link link TX! (IIRC). I am seriously considering the 02 just not sure if I want to buy something with that many miles on it.

I still say, if youre only getting 16mpg highway in a stock I6 WJ, something is amiss. I know of plenty getting 18-20 reliably.

All Overlands got the up country suspension until it was discontinued in 2003, its just that some people deleted the option for no good reason.

So I talked to the bank today as I have not had a vehicle loan in like ten years needed some details-- Holy crap nothing older than an 05 or less than 7500 will they loan on. I knew things had changed but damn!! Now I have to do math with insurance and crap involved...

Wow, your bank sucks. Get the loan from somewhere else. At Post Community Credit Union in Battle Creek, I got a loan 8 months ago on my first Jeep - 2000 WJ, for $3200. I am about to add another $1000 when I trade mine in for another 2000 with the 4.7. Already called them and got it squared away. They are really easy to work with and will give a loan to just about anybody.....(they gave one to me :rolleyes1::shrug:)

I didn't even notice the post about the two you found. I don't think 149,000 is too much. Josh has 100,000 with no issues.

Im liking this one right now

http://nmi.craigslist.org/ctd/1544354494.html

It has a salvage title and has had front end work but the guy was straight up about it and says he has all the pictures from prior to repair so there are no secrets

Looks pretty decent to me!

121,000 on mine now, bought it with 43,000. Plenty of guys are getting a lot of life out of the 4.7. Its a very well designed engine from everything ive read.

Not to steal the thread but does that mean that Josh's springs are upcountry? If so I need to talk to that boy.

JoDee's 03 laredo with the I6 gets 18-20 overall during the spring/summer/fall and is at 17.7 right now (just checked) for the winter. once november hits she pretty much puts it in full-time 4wd and leaves it there until march. 164,000 miles, k&n air filter, oil changes every 5,000-6,000 miles, 32psi front/30psi rear, leaky front axle pinion seal and it's still running on stock plugs. i expect a slight bump in the spring when i change them.

The upcountry arent that much taller anyway, 3/4" or something. Ill make you a great deal on a set of stock wj springs if youre interested. If you want a taller spring, just go IRO and be done with it.

:handjob: Mine gets about 13.5 all the time. On the highway, if I reset it when Im already up to speed, I can get 18. But as soon as I have to slow down and speed up again, it drops right back down to 15-16. Im pretty sure something is amiss, but shhhh, Im trying to dump it off onto a dealer for trade on a V8 :Fu:

I still have your front springs. Never got around to throwing them in. Let me know if you want them to complete your set to sell or whatever.

Aha, I wondered why I only had the rear ones in the garage. I figured I just left them at Pat's or had them stashed somewhere. I forgot I gave them to you! I dont need them for anything. I need to get rid of the rest of the crap ive got laying around here!
